Why do I have five separate blogs on Substack?
Separating my content by theme helps me keep my work organized while also making it easier for readers to choose one or more blogs to subscribe to.
In a recent Mastodon post where I noted that I maintain five personal blogs on Substack, someone replied, “Why do you need so many?”, adding that it must be a lot of work.
Honestly, the set-up is as much for me as it is for readers and potential subscribers. I have varied interests and talents that I share through my blogs. Categorizing these into separate blogs makes it easier for me to organize my posts and for individuals to decide which blogs they might find appealing or of interest. Perhaps they like sports and that’s all they want to hear about. They’re not interested in local news, my thoughts, or my random posts on assorted other things.
So, without further adieu, here are my five blogs and links to each, along with why I created each one and readers can expect to see posted.
sportsguysean’s Hat Trick
This was where it all started for me. While working as the sports editor of The Glengarry News in Alexandria, Ontario, Canada (for some 14 years), I began blogging my experiences and sharing extra stories that didn’t make it into the newspaper. This was part of a WordPress website I ran for many years. Much of that “old” content was transferred to Substack when I started writing on this platform, and it remains here in the archive that’s available to paid subscribers.
Since my job at the newspaper was eliminated in 2019, I’ve continued to post new content as best I can. It’s certainly more challenging without the resources of a newspaper behind me. Still, I do what I can to share local sports and recreation stories, as well as some items from the greater sports world that may not get the attention they should or could appeal to general interest readers.
Sean’s Glengarry Ramblings
My Glengarry blog is a newer one I’ve launched in an effort to share the news of Glengarry County (Ontario, Canada) in the absence of local media now that The Glengarry News has shut down. Again, I will strive to post as best I can, and I certainly welcome ideas and contributions from the community to build up this blog.
During my time working at the newspaper, I was well aware that there is always plenty going on across the county beyond sports, and the stories deserve to be told. Further, important that we face an outlet where we can hold our local governments and politicians accountable.
For this ad-free blog to be successful, I’ll need your involvement.
A Little This & That
I started this blog a while back on a WordPress site to give me a place to post random thoughts, photos, memes, and videos. When launching it on Substack I moved over some of that original content which you can freely access. No subscription is required. This blog generally aims to be informative and interesting (and maybe even a little fun) on topics that run the gamut. Some included subjects are technology, politics, war, humanity, and humour.
Words by Sean
This is my most personal blog. Here I share thoughts on my life along with my perspectives on our society and world. Topics could be any number of things from mental wellness to war to societal courtesies.
Untitled Serialized Fiction Stories by Sean
This is my newest blog. Since I was young, I’ve had a passion for creative writing. A number of times I’ve started writing a book only to stall for one reason or another. With this blog, I’m exploring the idea of serializable my fiction stories in hopes of eliciting feedback from readers and subscribers. And who knows, maybe someday this will lead me back to finally finishing writing at least one book in my lifetime.
You can connect with me through any of the blogs above or directly through my Substack profile at https://substack.com/@seanbray
Subscribers to each blog receive notification of each new post via e-mail. But it’s actually easier to enjoy and share posts (along with blog entries from thousands of other creatives) by using the Substack app. With the app, you can also participate in chat threads and read notes posted by me and other writers (kind of a long-form Twitter clone without the advertising and algorithms).
A free Substack account is required. Aside from being a reader and interacting with writers, you could start your own blog or, should you not want to take on that level of work, you can contribute to the blogs of other writers as a guest contributor. I certainly welcome expressions of interest from anyone who may be interested in contributing to my blogs. Please contact me if you need more information or might like to give this a try. You will be recognized for your work, and you maintain ownership of your writing.
